WordPress Plugin Guide

Install

Section titled “Install”

Until the plugin is approved on WordPress.org, install it manually:

  1. Download the plugin zip from altpilot.app (the homepage’s install button).
  2. In your WordPress admin: Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, select the zip, Install Now, then Activate.

Once approved on WordPress.org, search “AltPilot” from Plugins → Add New instead.

Connect your account

  1. Get an API key from your AltPilot dashboard (sign up free if you don’t have one).
  2. In WordPress: Settings → AltPilot.
  3. Paste your API key and click Test connection — this confirms the key works and shows your remaining monthly quota, without saving anything yet.
  4. Save. Choose your options:
    • Automatically tag new uploads — on by default. New images get alt text generated in the background (async, so uploads aren’t blocked).
    • Overwrite existing alt text — off by default. Turn on if you want AltPilot to replace alt text you’ve already written by hand.
    • Write generated caption to the WordPress caption field — on by default.

Tag your existing library

New uploads are covered automatically once connected — for images already in your Media Library, use the bulk action:

  1. Media → Library.
  2. Select the images you want tagged (or select all).
  3. From the Bulk actions dropdown, choose Generate alt text with AltPilot, then Apply.
  4. A progress bar shows the run. It processes a few images at a time in the background (so it never times out a page load, even for large libraries) and is safe to leave running or re-trigger if interrupted.

Yoast SEO / Rank Math

Nothing to configure — AltPilot writes to WordPress’s standard attachment alt and caption fields, the same fields Yoast and Rank Math read from.

Quota and upgrading

If a generation hits your plan’s quota, you’ll see an admin notice with an upgrade link instead of a silent failure — any images already queued resume automatically once your quota resets or you upgrade.

Reviews

Section titled “Reviews”

After 20 successful generations, you’ll see a one-time notice asking for a WordPress.org review. If AltPilot’s saving you time, it genuinely helps — that’s the plugin directory’s main ranking signal for a new plugin.
